You Are Not Alone
Giving birth was the most exciting and yet the most challenging experience of my life. I looked over at the miraculous tiny being in the car seat as we drove home and thought: "This is so permanent!" It is not like babysitting. No one else will come tonight to take this little one home.
Two weeks later as fatigue, sleep deprivation, and difficult hormone changes set in, I felt a profound sadness as overwhelm expanded and social isolation seemed to cause more darkness around me. Soon, it was hard for me to even get out of bed. I was barely able to do what I needed to do to care for my baby.
The challenging mood changes continued until a couple months later when I returned to my part time job and found distraction from the sad thought patterns. I started to find a sense of my own identity again. However, a new set of problems started to show up. I was finding it emotionally challenging to be away from my baby while working nightshift 2-3 times per week. I also struggled to keep up with the demands of being a new mom and making sure my own needs were also being met.
It was a matter of trial and error in order to learn how to manage all the tasks of parenting a baby while also managing my own emotional and physical health. It would have been so helpful to have had someone to guide me and help to make the transition much more efficient but I was determined to figure this out and become the best mom I could be.
Once I found my rhythm with parenting, I was able to feel joy and happiness again and was able to really enjoy this new relationship with my baby. Learning that I could nurture myself AND my new family was so fulfilling and rewarding.
